Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Thursday during his maiden
union budget for 2014-15 announced 5 new
IIT’s and IITM’s and allocated Rs 28, 635 crore.
The budget allocation to education has been increased by 12%
to Rs 83,771 crore. These new IITs will come up in Jammu, Chhattisgarh, Goa,
Andhra Pradesh and Kerala. IIM’s will be coming up in Himachal Pradesh,
Punjab, Bihar, Odisha and Maharashtra.
However, there have been certain discussions around this new
set up and allocation of funds for the same. Setting up one IIT costs Rs 1750
crore and an IIM nearly Rs 1000 crore. IIT-Roorkee director Pradipto
Banerjee thinks new IITs will correct the historical wrong; the new government
should also address the problems of eight IITs that were set up during the UPA
regime.
However, Madan Mohan Malaviya Teacher’s Training Programme
has other views. With the allocation of
Rs 500 crore comes as a good initiative to bolster quality of school education.
The move to take information technology to children through virtual classrooms
will increase access.
