NIT students to face 100% hike from next session

Council of National Institute of Technology (NIT) has approved 100% hike in its fees from next session. So if approved, the revised fee structure will Rs 70,000/- pa which has increased from Rs 35,000/-.

However, as per the fee statistics, the fee across 30 NITs is not uniform. In the some of the centers, the fee is less than Rs 30,000 pa. The fees hike was being recommended by committee members citing the reason of 50% salary of faculty should be generated within institutes.

The council has also decided that 10% non-creamy layer OBC students would get a fee waiver of 50%. The council has also agreed to get accreditation from National Board of Accreditation. IITs on the other hand, had opposed this proposal on the ground that their quality is superior.

As per the NIT director, “Accreditation is always a good idea. It helps in correcting mistakes and improving quality. This is being done so that India can become a member of the Washington Accord."

Besides fees hike, the council has decided to start separate portal on which students, parents and faculty will be having freedom to find loopholes in working of institution. Malaviya NIT centre in Jaipur has already started a portal and appointed a nodal officer to monitor cases of corruption.

To make these institutes stand as role model of transparency, ministry official said, “Be it IITs or NITs we want these institutions to be role models of transparency. Institutes should not remain opaque to the outside world if it has to attract the best talent."
